Cha Joo-young began acting in her mid-twenties after studying abroad. She made early appearances in 2014–2015 with roles in Dr. Frost and My Unfortunate Boyfriend. Her formal breakthrough came in 2016 with the supporting role of Nam Joo-yeon in Cheese in the Trap, followed by parts in Love in the Moonlight and The Gentlemen of Wolgyesu Tailor Shop.
