Song Seon-mi began her career in 1996 by placing second in the SBS Super Elite Model Contest. The following year she made her acting debut in the SBS drama Model (1997). She gained early visibility with a role in the popular sitcom Soonpoong Clinic (also known as Soonpoong Obstetrics and Gynecology).

Her film debut came in 1998 with Art Museum by the Zoo, opposite Ahn Sung-ki. She rose to wider recognition with the comedy My Boss, My Hero (2001). Throughout the 2000s she appeared in films such as Can’t Live Without Robbery (2002), Mokpo Is a Harbor (2004), and Hong Sang-soo’s Woman on the Beach (2006).
