Do Ji-won entered the entertainment industry after being selected as a model for the cosmetics brand Debong (드봉) in 1989, winning a highly competitive contest with a reported ratio of 1,400 to 1. Her ballet background and modeling work opened the door to acting.
She made her television debut around 1989–1990 and gained early attention with roles in dramas such as Seoul Ddukbaegi (1990), for which she won Best New Actress at the KBS Drama Awards. Throughout the 1990s she appeared in popular series including Men of the Bath House (1995–1996).
